Eczema on the  face can be difficult to hide, especially if it has developed into a rash. Eczema symptoms, particularly a rash may develop anywhere on the body, but especially those areas that can be easily reached by the hands, which makes the face susceptible to rashes. It is important to remember that a rash will only occur if you scratch. If you have an intense itch on your face, it is sometimes difficult to avoid scratching. In order to stop the symptoms of  eczema on face, focusing on reducing irritants to the face is key. Here are some tips on how to reduce contact with irritants and avoid eczema rashes on the face:

1. Avoid abrasive facial cleansers. Some facial cleaners include exfoliates and ingredients which can aggravate skin causing itching and even burning. Read the ingredients list on the cleanser to spot any separate ingredients you are allergic to. Opt for cleaners that are specified for sensitive skin to avoid eczema on face. If you find that these also irritate the skin, stop use immediately and choose glycerin soap or an oatmeal treatment.

2. Use glycerin soap or oatmeal to cleanse. Glycerin soaps don’t cause a reaction in most people and has been heavily recommended for eczema sufferers. You want to use good judgment when using a cleansing agent, if it does not work for you, then stop use immediately. An oatmeal cleanse works well for eczema on face. You can make your own by grinding up a cup of plain oatmeal in a blender until it becomes a very fine powder and then pour it in a handkerchief and tie it tightly. Use the same as you would a bar of soap. Oatmeal picks up dirt the same way dough picks up flour.

3. Moisturize before drying. Before completely drying your face, apply a thin layer of moisturizer that is free of perfume, fragrance, and dye, these may irritate the skin. If you would like to apply a second layer, wait 2 -3 minutes and do so.

4. Pat dry, don’t rub. Rubbing your face can cause it to become irritated and have the same effect as scratching. Whenever removing water or wetness on the face, pat dry.

5. Avoid contact with fruit juices, salty, and acidic foods. Avoid direct contact with foods that have a high acidic content, these have been found to irritate eczema on face, especially around the mouth. If you are not allergic and would like to still enjoy these foods, have someone else prepare them for you in slices that you can easily put in your mouth or wear gloves when preparing them for yourself.

6. Avoid direct sunlight. Don’t stay out in the sun for long period of times and wear an appropriate sunscreen to prevent eczema on face.

7. Avoid abrasive makeup. If you choose to wear make up, you should take special care to choose ones that have been ground up finely, as not to irritate the skin. Also avoid these ingredients in cosmetics that may irritate skin: benzoyl peroxide, alpha-hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, alcohol, retinol, and salicylic acid.  A lot of cheaper, poor quality makeup contain rough particles that can irritate the skin.

8. Use A Water Softener. Hard water can sometimes aggravate eczema on face, especially if you are putting it on your face. Some eczema sufferers find that using a water softener helps their skin to be less irritated.

9. Reduce Stress. Stress can have a negative effect on eczema symptoms. If at all possible, leave the stressful situation for a while and listen to relaxing music, do light exercise, or some other activity that you have found that soothes you. Sometimes it is difficult to get away from a stressful situation, especially if it is part of a job or career. You may want to practice Yoga or Pilates to relieve stress or learn effective techniques in meditation or prayer.

10. Distract Yourself. If you find that it is difficult to control scratching your face, try to distract yourself with another activity or a chore. Choose whatever it takes to get the attention off the itching and on to something productive, like a game, homework, or a craft.
